The Saga Continues

So our tour of all medical departments with Emma continues...

During her five year checkup back at the beginning of April, E's doctor expressed concern (it's a pattern now) about a possible umbilical hernia. He wasn't overly concerned, but explained that, while umbilical hernias are SUPER common, they usually go away by the age of 5. If they haven't, that's usually when you go visit a surgeon to talk about hernia repair. He went on to further explain that even though it's not a serious issue, for girls, it's something that they recommend getting fixed sooner rather than later. Worst case scenario for a girl with an unfixed umbilical hernia: rupture during pregnancy. Part of me was thinking about the unlikely event that Emma will actually get pregnant, which is a heartbreaking reality for her. The other part of me was thinking that if she does get pregnant, we don't want a hernia that we could have fixed now to get in the way.

So now, Emma is set for her second surgery of her life. Rory and I joked about how many doctors' visits and procedures that Emma's had in her short five years of life while Penny is on the other end of the spectrum. She's had a few extra doctors' visits, but nothing to the extent of E. Such is life with children, I guess :)

Emma will be going in to Vanderbilt Children's two weeks from today to have her hernia fixed. We LOVED her surgeon so that makes this mama a little less worried. He was super funny and explained the process of the surgery very well. It'll be no more than 30 minutes, Lord willing, and then she'll have a week of recovery. Better to get it out of the way before school rather than have her sit out of recess for a week! Even though this is a minor surgery, she will still be put to sleep, so your prayers for a smooth and uneventful surgery are appreciated!

And with that, the rest of our summer will hopefully be filled with relaxing trips to parks and hanging out in our inflatable pool ;) That's what I pray, at least.

God bless!
