Spoke Too Soon
My last post was updating everyone on the issues Emma is having with her speech, and apparently now her hearing. I believe I jinxed myself saying that Emma had never had an ear infection....
Well now she has. We spent the better part of this week dealing with a VERY miserable toddler. Sunday really started it off when Emma started running a little bit of a fever that night. After waking up in the middle of the night with her crying and having to give her some Tylenol to bring the fever back down, she finally was able to sleep some and we had a girl's day at the house on Monday. She was suppose to have gone to her speech evaluation that morning, but I thought it a better idea not to get a feverish child out and about. I called the doctor and got an appointment for Tuesday morning so we could figure out what was going on. I had been noticing that she was favoring her right ear more during the day but seemed otherwise fine most of the day, but like clockwork, towards the evening, she morphed back into a cranky, uncomfortable, miserable little girl. Monday night was, again, a long night for everyone. This time, her fever spiked to 104, which resulted in her getting sick in her bed. Rory and I quickly sprang into action getting her sheets changed and I ran a bath for her to see if we could get her fever down and clean her up. After the bath and some Tylenol, her temp quickly came down to 101. I had already called the nurse line in a panic wondering if we should take her to Children's. The nurse assured us that since her temp had come down quickly with meds that she would be fine through the night and they would see her the next day. So after that heart attack for Rory and me, we finally got back to sleep and Rory stayed home with her Tuesday to take her to the doctor. After many tests (no blood work this time though, thank goodness), Vivi determined that it was an ear infection and gave us some antibiotics and instructed us to keep alternating the Tylenol and Motrin for the fever. Who knew that the fever would be the worst part of an ear infection?! Remember, too, that this was our first time dealing with an ear infection, so that comment may be typical of a parent who's never dealt with one.
So Tuesday night was, again, same as the two nights before, minus Emma getting sick in her bed. She woke up, this time, at about 9 and we had just given her some medicine about an hour before that so she spent the next two hours in our bed whining and crying and being generally miserable. Once we could give her more medicine, she was so worn out that she was asleep before I could even put her back in her bed. Wednesday, I went in for a half day so I get a few things done and then went back home to keep Emma. Rory ended up not having to go into work like he thought, so we had a family day at home. Emma was still fairly miserable most of the day and her temp was going up and down like a seesaw. I'm pretty sure at this point, we've given her an entire bottle of Tylenol and Motrin. Since she was still running some fever on Wednesday, I knew we couldn't take her to daycare so I called in reinforcements - Reesee. My mom is so amazing! Even being 3 hours away, she will still drop everything and come help when we need it! Grandmothers are invaluable. So Reesee hightailed it up on Wednesday night and, thankfully, Emma had a MUCH better night. She woke up once at 1 am but was not running any fever so I counted that as a HUGE win!
Thursday was a Reesee and Emma day and Rory and I got back to work. She had a much better day and was more active. She's gradually getting her appetite back but it's still not the usual bottomless pit type of appetite, which means we still have food left in the house. Lol!
So as of today, Emma is doing much better and even got to go back to daycare! She was so excited to see Ms Cindi and all her friends! We're grateful that she's feeling so much better and I'm actually thinking this is a blessing in disguise because we have her ENT appointment on Monday. Maybe with this ear infection having been this week, they'll be able to determine the best course of action to help our little E.
We're ready to get back to our "normal" lives. Hope everyone has a great Friday and a good weekend!
God Bless!
