No more please!
This past week has been a week from...well, let's just say, it wasn't great. I'm praying this week will be WORLDS better, and so far, so good, as of today.
To start, Penny has been fighting a cough for about two weeks and it wasn't getting any better. I made the decision last weekend to go ahead and call the doctor about it because it was starting to affect her sleep (and ours). I finally heard back from a nurse on Tuesday and they wanted to have her come in so they could check everything out. Up until this point, it was just a cough - no fever, no runny nose, nothing else symptom-wise. Wednesday, we loaded up to go to the doctor, and wouldn't you know, Penny's nose starts running like a leak in the Hoover Dam! Vivi took a look at her and listened to her chest, and thankfully didn't hear anything in her lungs. She guessed it was a viral infection and that we would likely just have to let it run its course. She did get a swab from Penny's nose just to be sure and told us she would have the results on Thursday.
Keep in mind, the whole first half of the week, I was working with her on sleeping on her tummy so I wouldn't walk in to find her under her snoogle again. This resulted in a few nights of up every couple of hours to put her paci back in and sooth her. By Tuesday night, she slept all night on her tummy! Yay! Ok, back to the what the doctor found...
Wednesday night was a little rough because Penny couldn't breath now from the congestion and runny nose. Sleeping on her stomach seemed to make it worse, so we were back to up every couple of hours. :/ At any rate, Vivi called on Thursday afternoon and broke the bad news. Penny had not one infection, but THREE - two viral and one bacterial. She said that Penny was one sick little girl! I was terrified at that point that she would tell us it was some rare infection that would need to be watched around the clock by nurses and send us to Children's (I'm THAT mom who jumps to the worst possible conclusion before waiting for the truth). Thankfully, she said that all Penny needed was a good steroid and an antibiotic to help kick the infections and help with the cough. We had been lucky that Penny had not been running a fever up to this point too! That was too good to last. Thursday evening, she got her very first fever of 100.4. I know that's barely a fever, but I could tell that she was miserable, so on top of all the other pharmaceuticals she was taking, we added Tylenol to help with the fever and help her get a little sleep...ha.
From Thursday night until Sunday, our nights were worse than having a newborn! Seriously! She was up every hour and a half to two hours, which meant that I was literally running on fumes. Factor in the lack of sleep from the first half of the week due to working on sleeping on her tummy, and you have a legit zombified mom! Coffee didn't do squat, so I just sucked it up and put on my big girl panties to make it through the week! The one thing that kept me going was KNOWING that it would get better. I guess with a first kid, you have no idea what to expect and the unexpected is terrifying. With the second, you know that everything will pass eventually. So Friday was a mommy/Penny day! She did great during the day! She ate well and took great naps, but turned into the terribly miserable two month old from the evening on. To say that I was looking forward to the weekend was an understatement. I knew that I would at least have the opportunity to take a nap if I absolutely needed it with Rory being at home with me; not that that happened, but I had the opportunity ;)
With Penny slowly on the mend, we made plans to celebrate one of our friend's birthday on Saturday. I knew at this point that Penny would be fine during the day so it wasn't going to stop us from getting out of the house. We had a BLAST playing archery tag (you really need to look it up on youtube! It's so much fun!) and then continued the celebration with a grill-out on the lake that evening. Both girls were out on the trip home and then it was a quick trip from the car to bed for both of them! Still a rough night for Penny, but she did give us one good four hour stretch that night, so I could see the light at the end of the tunnel!
Sunday was a rough day for Penny, but I'm not really sure why. She ate good but was just ill as a hornet when she wasn't asleep or eating! Probably overstimulated from the day before...hmm. I was praying all day that it would translate into a good night of sleep, and wouldn't you know it...she finally slept all night with no interruptions! All you moms out there know that that doesn't mean that this mama didn't have interruptions. I only got up once in the middle of the night (only because I had a week of doing that over and over again) to check on her and then went right back to sleep. She slept from 8:45 to 6 so here's hoping that we're back to our "normal" routine!
With all the roughness going on with Penny, you'd think there would be no more to share! Psh. Emma had a great week, but had a few unfortunate incidents sprinkled throughout. First, she decided to cartwheel down the stairs last weekend which resulted in a small bruise on her tush. This is her first ever accident on the stairs, so I count that a win! From there, she decided it would be a good idea to slide across the driveway one afternoon and skinned her knee up (I hope you can detect the sarcasm in that sentence...my child doesn't have daredevil tendencies - just clumsy). It wasn't all that bad but did leave a nice strawberry on one of her knees. Saturday night, after running around barefoot at the lake house, we discovered that she was bit by something on her foot. Sunday morning, it was bright red, swollen and itchy and hot to the touch. She complained so much about putting any weight on it or shoes on that she spent another day barefoot and being toted around by Rory and me. We've been putting cortisone cream on it like there's no tomorrow and gave her some Benadryl last night. It seemed a tad better this morning, but was still bright red and a little swollen. We're both watching it like a hawk to make sure it gets better and not worse. Here's hoping...
Rory made it through his spring semester with an A and a B! We're now gearing up for his very last class starting in a little over two weeks. I'm SO proud of him and can't wait for him to be done!
I'm praying that this week is far more uneventful than last week! I hope everyone enjoys the return of the normal Alabama spring weather!
God Bless!
